Palliative Care for Families


It can be overwhelming when someone you love is living with a serious illness. It is not easy to watch loved ones suffer. Not knowing what the future holds can be scary and it can be difficult to figure out what you can do to help. We at Balsam may be able to help you cope with some of the problems you are facing. We are here to help. You do not have to face these challenges alone.

Palliative care is a medical approach that aims to improve the quality of life of patients who are facing life-threatening illness. It aims to prevent and relieve suffering of those patients, and also offers support to the family. The health care team at Balsam, the Lebanese Center for Palliative Care, provides palliative care services at home to help patients and their family members cope with illness.

Our Services

Palliative care professionals assess and treat all problems related to the illness and its effects on the patient, including the physical, psychological, social and spiritual. Pain management, management of other symptoms, and treatment of bedsores are of utmost importance. The plan of care is developed according to the wishes of the patient and family. The goal is to provide the best quality of life for as long as life lasts.

1. We Provide care to patients regardless of diagnosis, gender, age, nationality, disability, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or ability to pay.

2. The services provided by Balsam are free of charge. Families contribute by supplying medications or other needed supplies as they can.

3. Our services are normally provided in the patients' home environment; when this is not possible we do offer our services to patients in the hospital.

4. Our services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

5. Our goal is to help patients achieve the best possible quality of life. We aim to relieve suffering, restore dignity, and provide comfort to people living with a life-limiting illness.

6. We provide relief from bothering symptoms such as discomfort, pain, anxiety, and shortness of breath. We also care for pressure ulcers.

7. We provide emotional and psychosocial support to patients and their families during the course of illness, and guide them throughout the process. We relieve suffering and promote quality of life through compassionate and expert care.

8. We develop and plan our care according to the wishes of the patient in collaboration with their family and their primary care physician. Patients and families should be partners in the care provided by Balsam.

Referral Process

How to refer a patient

If you think you know someone who can benefit from our services, you can contact Balsam. The Balsam team will usually will communicate with you and the patient's primary care physician. We will communicate with you and the patient's primary care physician to get more information on the medical problems and understand the type of services required. It will also help us coordinate care and ensure the best possible outcome for each patient.

We provide care to patients with a life-limiting illness who are unlikely to recover. Care is offered to all patients without regard to diagnosis, gender, age, nationality, disability, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or ability to pay.
